PublicProfiler1 estimates the total world occurence in around 2000AD of the Swindell type surname in excess of 16,000 - probably less than 17,000 by my (AJS) estimation. The total world population was around 6,000 million at this time - so the Swindells represent about 0.003% of the world population!

No Swindell or variant has been found outside Cheshire in a sample of the lay subsidy rolls (1290-1334) or poll tax (1377-1381). Because taxes in Cheshire at this time were raised by a different system (the mize) rather than per person, there are no equivalent name lists for Cheshire for this period. However this lack of examples of Swindell outside Cheshire, together with the 1881 distribution, strongly argues for a Cheshire origin for the name.
